I started the Traineeship because I wanted a long-term career with real progression and the opportunity to make a positive impact on people’s safety at work. I came from a motor trade background and had already progressed quickly to the higher end of the career path by the age of 21. That made me realise I wanted to move into a field where I could continue developing without hitting a ceiling. Health and Safety stood out to me because I had already been exposed to many of the risks through working as a mechanic, particularly when handling chemicals and hazardous substances. It felt like a natural transition into a role where I could use that experience while also helping improve workplace safety and protect people.

I stated the Traineeship because I wanted a career in health and safety management after working in the construction industry for many years, but when I saw the job guarantee, I decided it was definitely for me.

I started this Traineeship because I didn’t enjoy my job in teaching secondary maths and really needed a career change, because working in a shop was only transitional and not fully inspiring me for the long term.

I started the Traineeship to make a deliberate career change into health and safety. In my previous role, I took on the responsibility of Fire Marshal, where I identified and resolved several safety issues. That experience sparked a genuine passion for health and safety and made me realise this was a field I wanted to build a career in. After spending many years working in a call center, I knew I wanted to take my career in a new direction and broaden my horizons. My initial interest in undergoing this Traineeship came soon after I graduated from university. After graduation, I wanted to get into the Aviation industry as a Risk Analyst and Systems Support Specialist, and although I landed interviews, a first class bachelor’s degree wasn’t enough for these positions. These positions required additional qualifications and experience in the industry, which I did not have. After numerous failures, I decided to look for courses that would help me to make steps towards a career change. I started the Traineeship because I wanted to change my career path and deepen my knowledge in health and safety. I had spent 20 years as a bricklayer, working on construction sites. As I was getting older, I decided to take my career in a different direction and give my body a break from the tools. Going into H&S seemed like a natural progression.

My family grew more with the addition of my son in 2022, I had a daughter already in 2010. I looked at my life, and whilst it wasn’t bad, I wanted more for myself and my family. I wanted to show them that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. So now I knew I was going for it, but where to start? I knew I could apply anywhere to do the courses needed, but how was I going to get the job? How was my CV even going to stand out for said job? I got quite down about this bit, then stumbled across the Health and Safety Traineeship. I was at first in disbelief, surely it can’t deliver all this, I was very much a sceptic. However, I started, and I struggled at times, but support was there to keep me on track all the way. Got to the end, and have to say Barry, who I had as a recruitment advisor, was purely amazing!
