Edward Johnson's journey

Why did you start the traineeship?

I stated the Traineeship because I wanted a career in health and safety management after working in the construction industry for many years, but when I saw the job guarantee, I decided it was definitely for me.

What did you enjoy most?

I enjoyed using my practical knowledge of the industry with the legislation and coursework, which made learning about industry-specific issues much easier for me to understand.

What's your current role like?

My job role is planning, implementing, and overseeing safe systems of work in accordance with Network Rail and TFL procedures, as well as practical work on rail infrastructure projects on both above-ground and on the London Underground. The most important aspect of my job is to use safe methods of work to protect staff while doing engineering works and track maintenance, as well as doing regular inspections and risk assessments, while making sure everyone else is both competent and fit for work. Another aspect is giving safety briefings and checking up on trackside workers. I enjoy working with new people, working trackside with rail infrastructure and constantly updating my knowledge base.
