Matthew Owen's journey

Why did you start the traineeship?

I started my traineeship at the start of June 2020, since the age of 18 I had been working in bars/pubs even though I knew I had the skills to be successful in IT. As covid peaked I looked to stay productive and decided to take on this IT course. At first, I was a little nervous but the support provided to me in the build-up to my exams was exceptional.

What did you enjoy most?

When I began my course I was highly motivated and finished 50% of it within the first month, however as work opened again the progress slowed. The thing I enjoyed the most about the course is that you can study at your own pace, no matter how flexible your routine is you can always find some time to study. I also enjoyed how easy it was to access the learning videos provided and the practice questions as it’s all located on one portal.

What's your current role like?

My current role is as a full-time IT support technician for Onecom. Daily, I take calls helping people with their computers, broadband, landlines, printers, routers, and firewalls but sometimes the best part is the first-hand learning I experience when approaching a new fault as it helps to keep the role feel fresh. The course prepared me so well for the role and the interview tips I received when I finished also helped me get through! I am hoping to push myself in the future and progress into the 2nd line role.
