Ian Guest's journey

Why did you start the traineeship?

I was looking for a career change and felt IT would be a good fit for me. I have worked mainly as a careers advisor over the last 20+ years and have highly developed communication skills. I was interested in a role that combined these skills with new technical abilities and knowledge. I felt Cybersecurity was an area that I would find interesting and would offer me a long-term career.

What did you enjoy most?

There was a breadth of information to study through the video courses, but each course had content which overlapped with others. I particularly enjoyed the practice labs, where I got hands-on experience, and the quizzes, which offered the opportunity to prepare for the final exams.

What's your current role like?

I am currently working for Orca, an MSP, as a junior 2nd line service desk analyst. The role involves finding solutions to technical problems; managing incidents; working on projects; and meeting client requirements. The role is very varied, with no two calls the same. I enjoy using my problem-solving skills and fault-finding abilities to resolve clients’ issues. I work in a very supportive environment and working collaboratively with colleagues is key to a successful IT business.
