Cain Phelps's journey

Why did you start the traineeship?

After serving in the Royal Marines, I knew I wanted a career where I could still make a real impact, and health and safety seemed like the perfect fit. I have always been interested in risk management, leadership, and keeping people safe, so I started looking into qualifications that would help me make the move. The traineeship offered a clear path into the industry, so I jumped at the chance.

What did you enjoy most?

What I really liked was how flexible it was. It allowed me to study around my other commitments without feeling overwhelmed. The course content was clear and well-structured, and I always had support when I needed it. It made getting my NEBOSH and IOSH certifications a smooth process, and by the time I finished, I felt confident stepping into the industry.

What's your current role like?

I’m now working as a Junior Group Health, Safety & Environmental Advisor at Wernick Group, and I’m loving it. Every day is different as I get to visit different sites, carry out risk assessments, and help create a safer working environment for everyone. It’s really rewarding knowing that the work I do makes a genuine difference. The transition from the military to civilian life wasn’t always easy, but this training gave me the qualifications and confidence to take that step.
