Ted Kemp
Job Before: Library Assistant
Job Now: School ICT Support Technician @ Stockport Council
Why did you start the Traineeship?
Having worked for several years in a specialised role in an engineering library in London, after relocating to the North West with my partner I struggled to find a similar role that fitted my skill set. After working in a few lower-level jobs in the same sector I found myself feeling unfulfilled and pessimistic about the opportunities for progression. I have had an interest in IT since my childhood, and it seemed a good option as an alternative career path to explore, but I was unsure as to how to get a solid grounding in the technical side of things that would enable me to get started. IT Career Switch provided the perfect opportunity to learn at my own pace.
What did you enjoy most about the Traineeship?
The traineeship was very accessible and started at a level that was well suited to a novice. I also appreciated the fact that the course continued to a fairly high technical level, and included practical exercises on Cisco Packet Tracer.
What's your current role like?
I’m working as part of a friendly team providing a comprehensive IT support service to around 70 local schools. It’s a varied role with a mixture of office-based work and school visits. I am learning a lot and looking forward to the time when I will be up to speed with the rest of the team. (My job title is Schools ICT Support Technician at AVA Services- Stockport Council)
