Job Before: Courier
Job Now: 1st line IT support engineer @ Dovetail IT Support Ltd
Why did you start the Traineeship?
I was always interested in computers. I was the tech-savvy person in the family so my parent and siblings would always turn to me for help. It never really bothered me. They helped me improve by giving me all those requests. At that time I didn’t think it would ever be more than a hobby but 20 years later I was given a chance to make it a carrier when I was sitting at home due to the coronavirus and surfing the internet looking for new opportunities. I saw an IT carrier switch ad and thought to myself this might be a good time to make my hobby into a carrier. So in a way, it was the IT carrier switch that gave me the nudge I needed to make the change.
What did you enjoy most about the Traineeship?
My favourite part of the traineeship was the live lab exercises. It was a great way to implement all the knowledge I have attained during my studies. In my experience having the ability to try something first-hand really helped me learn faster and more efficiently.
What's your current role like?
I’m a first-line IT engineer at private MSP. My job is to triage new support tickets from clients. I either solve them myself or escalate them to senior staff. I deal with all kinds of problems from password resets, application troubleshooting, printer setups to visiting clients and helping them in person. It’s a fast-paced environment with a lot of opportunities to learn new skills and to improve existing ones.
