Jamie-Rao
Course:  IT Technician Traineeship
Placement Date: May 2023
Why did you start the Traineeship?
I graduated with my foundation year in Computer Science, which was not a great experience at all for me. It was during Covid-19 so my whole university experience was based online. In fact, I did not really learn much and accruing over £13,000 in debt in one year did make me want to reconsider. I have always been more of a hands-on learner, rather than a textbook learner so I decided to drop out of university and switch to IT Career Switch, a company that did look promising with the 15-week job guarantee. That means after I achieved my certification, I could get my hands dirty and also join the corporate ladder.
What did you enjoy most about the Traineeship?
My favourite part of the course was the availability of so many learning resources. From the lecture videos to the note-taking to the presentations, to the mock tests, all of them I took advantage of and made my days as a CompTIA A+ trainee much easier. I have never been to a type of institution where they take care of their students this much through quick responses (even when they are outside of work).
What's your current role like?
I am currently a Junior IT Technician at WorkshopIT. We specialise in outsourcing cyber security/general IT support to the AEC sector. My daily job is to provide 1st and 2nd front-line support to our clients either personally or remotely through a ticketing system called Halo. I also visit client sites, conduct routine maintenance and set up or upgrade existing computers, servers, and other IT equipment. Most of our clients are using VMware to complete their daily tasks so we are set to create and maintain these virtual desktops. Every day is different to the next, it is like an adventure, learning and growing every single day. I am very thankful to IT Career Switch for giving me this opportunity.
