Why did you start the Traineeship?
At a point in my life, I decided that I was not happy in my career and wanted a change. I have friends who work in IT and I could see the options open to them were far more significant than mine as a solicitor. I have been interested in computers and technology throughout my life and a career in IT seemed like something that I would enjoy, be challenging and offer me the opportunities I was seeking.
What did you enjoy most about the Traineeship?
I enjoyed the fact that I was able to work at my own pace. I have two young children so being flexible was ideal for me. I don’t think it would have been possible if I had to commit myself to regular classes etc. The content began fairly simply and progressed into more complicated ideas but the progression was such that I felt I understood what I was being taught throughout. The online tests allowed me to test my knowledge regularly throughout the traineeship and gave me confidence that I was taking everything in.
What's your current role like?
I started my current role just over a month ago. The learning curve has been quite steep but the knowledge I gained during the traineeship has given me a good background so that the concepts and technology I am using are not alien to me. My role primarily supports business software, ERP and CRM systems and involves handling all calls and remotely logging on to networks to resolve ongoing IT issues. Prioritising and good timekeeping are essential as I am resolving live system problems affecting the customer’s businesses.
I am looking forward to getting on with the cyber security courses that I have already been sent, with a view to progressing in my career once I have been in the role for 2 years.
