Marcus Wallace IT Career Switch
Course: Cyber Security Traineeship
Placement Date: August 2025
Why did you start the Traineeship?
I started my Traineeship to finally turn my growing interest in IT into a full-time career. After years of trying to get an apprenticeship without success, I found my passion for cybersecurity through my time in the Army Reserves. Honestly, I was also just ready to get out of the warehouse!

When I found the IT Career Switch program, I was all in. I dedicated a whole year to it, fitting in studying during lunch breaks and every spare moment I had while working two jobs, buying a house, and planning a wedding. It was a lot of hard work and many sleepless nights, but I can genuinely say it was worth it. To anyone with a passion for a new career, I say go for it – the hard work pays off!

What did you enjoy most about the Traineeship?
My favourite part of the Traineeship was the fresh perspective it gave me. The best thing about IT is that just when you think you know a lot, you realise there’s so much more to learn. The exposure to new materials, like the Live Labs, was fantastic for helping me refine my skills and map out my future.
What's your current role like?
All my hard work led me to my current role as a First Line Support at Cosco Shipping Lines (UK) Ltd. My first six weeks have been amazing! The team is so friendly, and the IT department has been incredibly welcoming. I’m learning new things every day and constantly building on my skills and experience.

No two days are the same, and I love the new challenges. While the technical side of IT is crucial, I truly believe that customer service skills are just as important. If people donโ€™t feel comfortable coming to you with an issue, youโ€™ve already lost half the battle. I’m already involved in some large projects and have my sights set on my next qualification – the learning never stops!
