Job Before: Legal Secretary in Clinical Negligence
Job Now: ICT Technician @ South Molton Community College
Why did you start the Traineeship?
During previous administrative support roles in both the healthcare and law sectors, I found myself being called upon as the first point of contact for general IT troubleshooting issues. I thought it would be fulfilling if I could resolve these issues – before the IT team were called upon. This, together with a long-held interest in IT and wanting to progress myself, spurred me on to find a traineeship, and make IT a career.
What did you enjoy most about the Traineeship?
The tutors who provide the video learning are incredibly knowledgeable. It is handy that PDF’s of the slides are provided, which you can use to take notes and refer back to. I took a lot of notes during my studies, which was made easier due to the fact that many of the videos are subtitled. The LiveLabs are an invaluable learning tool, as they provide insight into troubleshooting in the real world. I would say that this was the most enjoyable part for me.
What's your current role like?
I’m an ICT Technician at a secondary school. It’s great being able to utilise the skills and knowledge I have acquired to help troubleshoot scenarios, thereby avoiding disruption to the school day. I’m still finding my feet and it can be challenging at times, but I love communicating with the children and teachers. By maintaining the school’s network and helping to provide resolutions to IT problems, I actually feel like I’m doing my bit to help the kids learn and progress. I was lucky enough to secure this job within 4 weeks of completing the traineeship – all thanks to the amazing work of Sarah, who found the role for me, together with the careers team who put together an incredible CV. For this, I am forever grateful.
