Graham Futhey IT Career Switch
Course: Network Engineering Traineeship
Placement Date: April 2025
Why did you start the Traineeship?
After over 20 years working in retail, I decided it was time for a change. Iโ€™ve always been interested in IT, but never had the chance to explore it professionally. The Traineeship gave me the perfect opportunity to learn new skills and begin a new career path in a field Iโ€™m genuinely passionate about. One of the parts that made it easier for me was being able to do the training around my current job. This made the transition much more manageable.
What did you enjoy most about the Traineeship?
What I enjoyed most about the Traineeship was being able to train at my own pace, which really suited my schedule and learning style. I also appreciated how the tutors in the video lessons shared their own real-life experiencesโ€”this helped me better understand the modules and how the skills apply in real-world situations. The Live Labs and Cisco Packet Tracer were also a massive help, as they gave me hands-on experience and allowed me to apply what I was learning in a practical way. As a result, Iโ€™ve gained a lot more confidence in my abilities and feel much more prepared to start a career in IT.
What's your current role like?
After being placed into an IT Support Technician role at WTS Systems, Iโ€™ve found that the real-world experience is really enhancing my skills. My understanding of the systems is improving every day. The team at WTS has spent a lot of time helping me develop my skills and has been great at introducing me to different areas of IT, including RMM software and Microsoft 365. Iโ€™m really enjoying my time in my new position!
