Andrew Macmillan
Job Before: Founder
Job Now: Infrastructure Analyst @ Complete I.T. Ltd
Why did you start the Traineeship?
I started the traineeship because I wanted to get the right skills that would set me up to enter the IT industry. I was an electrician for many years and discovered computing while embarking on an Electrical Engineering degree. Once I started learning more about computer systems I took the decision to retrain and start a new career. After researching various options, the IT Career Switch Traineeship looked like a fantastic option to get started.
What did you enjoy most about the Traineeship?
I would say that the amount of information I was exposed to was the most enjoyable thing about it. I am always open to learning new things and the Traineeship provided so many interesting courses to get stuck into. The Network+ and the Windows courses were among the most enjoyable as there were plenty of chances to put what I was learning into practice using virtual machines. I am a practical person who learns from doing rather than reading, so being able to practice really made the experience better. The practice labs at the end of the course added to this and ultimately helped me land a job very quickly after completing the training.
What's your current role like?
In my current role, I am an Infrastructure Analyst for a company called Complete I.T. I work in a school in East London in a small team who are responsible for all the IT systems in the entire school. It is fast paced, busy, and very educational. I am learning new things every day, and also putting the things I learnt during the training into practice. I do everything from configuring and repairing PCs, installing printers, and fixing projectors to checking and fixing network issues, rolling out Group Policy, and managing users in MS Office 365. It is a varied role with lots of chances to improve myself every day.
